Description

A quick, easy, and delicious crumble with a twist. This Chai Spiced Vegan Apple Crumble recipe is the perfect Sunday evening bake.


Ingredients

Units

For the crumble:

  • 180g Plain flour, sieved
  • 120g Unsalted, solid vegan butter
  • 70g Brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla paste/essence
  • Pinch of salt

For the apple filling:

  • 4 Apples
  • 2 tbsp Flour
  • 120g Light brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Ground Chai spice mix
  • Or make your own mix with
  • 1 pod of Cardamom, seeds removed and ground
  • 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
  • Pinch of Nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp Ground ginger
  • Small whole star anise

Instructions

  1. Peel, core and roughly chop the apples into bite sized pieces. Tip the apples into a bowl. Add the Chai spice mix as well as the flour and brown sugar. Toss the apple pieces in the mix until all slices are evenly coated. Set aside.
  2. To make the crumble, start by sifting the flour into a medium-sized bowl. Add the vegan butter, light brown sugar, and a pinch of salt. Combine the ingredients with your fingertips until clumps form, making a chunky, sandy mixture.
  3. In a medium sized oven dish, cover the base of the dish with the coated, chopped apples, to form an even layer. Then spoon the crumble mixture over the apples until all pieces are covered.
    Chefs Tip: If you’re using an air fryer for this recipe, ensure the dish you choose to cook the crumble fits well, with gaps around the sides of your air fryer basket to allow the air to circulate.
  4. Now, cook the apple crumble, either in the oven or in the air fryer.
    AIR FRY:
    Cover the dish securely with tin foil. (Unsecured, flapping foil can be a fire hazard in the air fryer so be sure it is secured well around the dish)
    Cook at 160°C for 20 minutes, or until the apples are soft.
    OVEN:
    Heat the oven to 180°C on convection.
    Cover the dish securely with tin foil and bake for 20 minutes, or until the apples are soft.
  5. Once the apples are softened, remove the foil and cook the crumble on top until it is golden and brown, about an extra 20 minutes (for both the air fryer and oven).
  6. Remove from the oven / air fryer and let cool slightly before dishing up. Serve with a vegan ice-cream, cream, or custard, and enjoy!
