Potatoes – are they not the most delicious little things? These fluffy, crispy potato smashies are my new favourite way to snack on potatoes. As simple as can be to make, they are the ultimate moreish and yummy snack.
Easy to dress up or down, smashies or smashed potatoes, are just delicious. Baked to perfect crispiness in the air fryer, the texture of these little potato bites is incredible.
Serve topped with sour cream and red onion pickles for a fancy canape, or enjoy sprinkled liberally with salt and soaked in piquant malt vinegar. These are also amazing served alongside a fresh garlic aioli. We made our own mayonnaise for this recipe, but you can simply grate fresh garlic into your favourite mayo.

Ingredients
- 1kg baby potatoes
- 2 Tbsp (32g) olive oil
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- flaky sea salt
- malt vinegar
- mayonnaise or aioli
To serve as a Sour Cream & Onion Smashie canapé
- Pickled red onion
- Sour cream
- Fresh herbs to garnish
- Crispy shallots
Instructions
- Wash the potatoes, then place them into a pot of salted water. Cook until soft and easily pierced with a knife.
- Transfer the potatoes to a baking sheet and use the bottom of a cup or mug to smash the potatoes to roughly 1cm in thickness. Don’t over-smash or you’ll end up with mashed potatoes.
- Mix the oil, garlic powder and pepper together then drizzle over the potatoes and gently toss to coat evenly.
- Remove the grill plate from inside your airfryer. Place the smashed potatoes directly into the base of air fryer basket in an even layer, and cook for 15-20 minutes at 195 degrees C, shaking halfway through, until the potatoes are crispy and golden brown.
- Drizzle liberally with malt vinegar, and sprinkle with flaky sea salt.
To serve as a Sour Cream & Onion Smashie canapé
Once the potatoes are golden and crisp, plate them up with a spoon of sour cream, then garnish with fresh herbs (dill or chopped chives), pickled red onion and crispy shallots.
