Crispy Smashed Sweet Potatoes

Crunchy, sticky, and sweet, these crispy smashed sweet potatoes deliver a lip smacking flavour. Ready in under 1 hour, enjoy these as a quick lunchtime snack or as a side to your Sunday roast.

Whether you’re using an air fryer or oven, these crispy smashed sweet potatoes are a quick and easy recipe for potatoes lovers. Paired with a yoghurt dipping sauce, these moreish chips will have you double dipping. The secret to the crisp outside and soft inside is smashing the sweet potatoes before popping in the oven. By smashing the potato slices you’re guaranteed crispy edges. Every. Time.

These are also the perfect snack for veganuary. Simply replace the animal derived products with vegan alternatives and you’re sorted. If you prefer your sweet potatoes a little more savoury, then pair with parmesan cheese (for the non-vegans) to add another level of flavour.

To cut through the sweet, honey layer we recommend trying out a garlic yoghurt dipping sauce. Either use garlic powder for a subtle hint of garlic in your sauce, or pop 1 finely chopped clove of garlic in the yoghurt for a punchy garlicky kick.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, you could pair these crisps with an Asian Aubergine, Peanut and Chili Dip, a Yoghurt Dip with Chilli Oil & Crispy Herbs, or this herbaceous Green Goddess Whipped Feta dip. Alternatively, give one of our other sauces or dips a try here

Description

Crunchy, sticky, and sweet, these crispy smashed sweet potatoes deliver a lip smacking flavour. Ready in under 1 hour, enjoy these as a quick lunchtime snack or as a side to your Sunday roast.

Ingredients

Units

For the smashed sweet potatoes:

  • 600g Sweet potato
  • 2 1/2 tbsp Olive oil
  • 2 tbsp Cornstarch
  • 1/2 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Sriracha
  • 1/2 tsp Freshly cracked black pepper
  • 1/21 tsp Flaked sea salt (add to taste)
  • 1 tsp Honey

For the garlic yoghurt sauce:

  • 1/4 cup / 90g Thick greek style yoghurt
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 tsp Garlic powder or 1 clove of finely chopped garlic (this quantity depends on your personal choice)

Instructions

  1. Peel and cut the sweet potato into 3cm thick slices. Boil with a pinch of salt until easily pierced with a knife (about 5-8mins).
  2. While the potatoes are cooking, combine the rest of the potato ingredients, except for the honey, together to form your cornflour and oil mixture.
  3. Drain the potatoes. Place them in one layer on a baking tray.
  4. Cut a small square of baking paper, then place this on top of a sweet potato slice. Use a glass or container to smash the sweet potato until just under 1cm thick. Repeat with the remaining sweet potato slices.
  5. Brush the cornflour and oil mixture over the sweet potatoes, then flip and repeat on the underside.
  6. Place in the oven or air fryer for 30-40 minutes at 180°C or until crispy and golden brown. Flip the sweet potatoes half way through cooking.
  7. While the sweet potatoes cook, make an easy dipping sauce by seasoning yoghurt with salt and pepper to taste. If you would like to make this a garlic affair, then add your garlic powder or finely chopped garlic clove to taste.
  8. Once the sweet potatoes are nearly cooked, drizzle the honey over the sweet potatoes and cook for the final few minutes until sticky.
  9. Remove from the air fryer or oven, season with salt and pepper, and plate up. Serve immediately with your garlic yoghurt dipping sauce.
