Air Fryer Smashed Potatoes
Inspired by the ultimate no-recipe-potato-recipe by Sam Sifton of NYT Cooking, these moreish air fryer smashed potatoes are decadently hearty and can be served with any toppings you fancy.
Everyone loves potatoes. And we really love potatoes here at the Culinary Cartel. We’ve tried quite a few different potato recipes over the years, and we’ve loved them all. We especially love a no-recipe recipe. So Sam Sifton of NYT’s delicious loaded smashed potatoes are right up our alley! The focus here is put squarely on the potatoes, and they sing especially loudly along with a chorus of bacon and cheese! This recipe is also so adaptable, you could add almost any topping you can think of, and it will still be delicious.
So, how do you make air fryer smashed potatoes?
I know we say it a lot, but this recipe really could not be any simpler! There are no quantities or exact times, improvisation is the name of the game here.
To make Sam Sifton’s smashed potatoes, you will need:
- Medium-sized potatoes, one per person will do.
- Olive oil
- Your favourite toppings – feel free to get creative here – bacon, cheese, cheese sauce, avocado, sour cream, chopped fried chicken, mince, chili con carne – you get the idea!
- An air fryer
Simply preheat your air fryer to 190 degrees (or if using the oven, 220 degrees C), toss your potatoes with olive oil and generously season with salt and pepper. Pop them in to roast until soft, then smash them with a coffee cup. Add your favourite toppings and serve!
Making these smashed potatoes in the air fryer makes an easy recipe even easier. Preheating is minimal or even skippable, depending on the air fryer, and the cooking time is cut down by half.
