A classic tequila margarita is a drink that almost everyone appreciates. It requires only three simple core ingredients and can be jazzed up and riffed on to your heart’s content. However, it’s also just as good in its pure and simple form. It’s up to you!
Tequila, orange liqueur or Cointreau, and lime juice are really all that you need to create this simple and delicious cocktail. However, you’ll notice that I have included the additions of simple syrup, chilli and a zingy Tajin rim for some extra pizzaz. If you can’t find Tajín Seasoning, never fear! Chilli salt will add some extra spice and fire to this drink.
This tequila margarita recipe is truly the essence of simplicity and deliciousness. You will need only 5 minutes, a cocktail shaker and 6 ingredients. As easy as that! Enjoy over ice on a warm afternoon, or serve alongside your favourite Mexican dish!

Ingredients
- 1 Tbsp Tajin, or chilli salt
- 60ml Blanco tequila (also called plato or silver tequila)
- 15ml Cointreau (you may also use other orange liqueurs such as triple sec or Grand Marnier)
- 1 lime (30ml lime juice and wedge for preparing the glass)
- 15ml sugar syrup
- 1/2 chilli
Instructions
- Use a wedge of lime along the rim of the glass, rub it in tajin or chilli salt and set aside
- Add tequila, half the chilli, orange liqueur, lime juice, and sugar syrup to a container filled with ice, and shake well until well chilled
- Strain into the prepared glass over fresh ice, add a few slices of chill for garnish
