Crispy Air Fryer Shallots

These tiny, crispy air fryer shallots are one of my favourite toppings to add to savoury dishes. Sprinkle them onto anything and everything, or enjoy them on their own as a crispy, crunchy snack!

Utterly crispy and caramelised in the air fryer, you can skip the deep fryer and all of the oil when it comes to these crispy little onion bits.

Guilt-free and flavourful, these thin, light and crispy air-fried shallots are the ideal topping for almost any savoury dish.

Sprinkle liberally as a topping, or nibble straight out of the bowl as a crispy treat (we won’t tell). Crumble them on top of salads and flatbreads, curries, or even dips. They will last up to a week stored in an airtight container in the fridge.

This recipe requires only 3 ingredients and 30 minutes of prep and cook time. Simply slice the shallots, toss with oil and coat with flour, air fry until crispy, and voila! Deeply caramelised, crispy shallots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why use shallots instead of onions?

We use banana shallots in this recipe. These long, thin shallots will yield onion rings that are the perfect size for garnishing.  If you can’t find shallots, you can use baby onions or halved white onions.

Description

These tiny, crispy air fryer onions are one of my favourite toppings to add to savoury dishes. Sprinkle them onto anything and everything, or enjoy them on their own as a crispy, crunchy snack!

Ingredients

Units
  • 60g shallots (2 shallots)
  • 1/2 tbsp oil
  • 1.5 tbsp plain flour

Instructions

  1. Slice the shallots to 1mm thickness.
  2. Separate the slices of shallot out into little rings, discarding the small circular centres.
  3. Drizzle the oil over the shallot rings, then lightly massage the shallots so that every ring is lightly coated in oil. Dust over the flour and toss the rings through the flour until well coated. Add a little more flour if necessary until the rings have a thin, scraggly layer of flour coating them, and no more flour will stick.
  4. Place in an air fryer at 120 degrees C for 20 minutes, shaking a few times while cooking. Cook until lightly browned and crispy. The rings will crisp up further as they cool.
Chefs Tip: If you struggled to cut the rings very thinly, and they don’t feel fully dehydrated, pop them back on air fry at 100C for as long as you need to achieve the desired result.
